MHS Presents Little Women

Theater Ensemble Shows Nov. 13, 14 & 15

What might vision, voice, interpersonal efficacy and gumption have looked like up-close in the mid-19th century? Follow the four teenaged March sisters as they navigate the journey to adulthood in this retelling of a classic Louisa May Alcott novel.

The MHS Theater Ensemble presents Little Women, based on Kate Hamill’s adaptation of Alcott’s Civil War-era story, in three shows — 7 p.m. on Thursday, November 13; 7 p.m. on Friday, November 14; and 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 15. All shows take place in the Woods Theater of the Elizabeth Gatchell Klein Arts Center on the Miss Hall’s School campus.

General admission is $10, and reservations are recommended. Senior citizen and handicapped-accessible seating are available. (After 4 p.m. on November 13, and through Saturday November 15, please call 413-395-7023 to reserve tickets.)

Jo March and her sisters — Meg, Beth, and Amy — are striving to be brave, imaginative women at a time when their ambitions are clashing with Victorian society’s expectations for them. Their journey to adulthood finds them navigating gender, class, politics, and romance while the nation around them is torn apart by the Civil War, and they simultaneously try to stay true to themselves and each other.

This MHS production features Fiona Gordon ’26 as the headstrong protagonist and aspiring novelist Jo March; Avah DeBenedetto ’27 as Meg, the oldest March daughter and a romantic at heart; Beta Gu ’26 as the sweet and shy younger sister Beth March; Eleanor Jacobsen ’27 as Amy, the opinionated and spunky youngest March sister; and Talulah Till ’28 as Marmee, the matriarch who keeps the March family together while the girls’ father serves as a chaplain in the war.

The show also stars Izzy Stewart ’28 as Laurie, a charming, caring, and wealthy neighbor, and Alfie Su ’28 as John Brooks, Laurie’s proper and well-educated tutor, and as Aunt March’s Parrot, an evil bird owned by the sisters’ judgmental and unpleasant older relative, Aunt March, who is played by Mazie Adler ’28. Mazie also performs as the rich and not terribly pleasant Mrs. Mingott. The cast also includes Sophie O’Brien ’27 as Mr. Laurence, Laurie’s wealthy grandfather; Maddie Craig ’26 as Hannah, the March’s longtime housekeeper, and as Mr. Dashwood, an unpleasant publisher; and Romee He ’27 as the sisters’ father, Mr. March.

The play’s technical crew includes Kara Kisselbrock ’26 as Stage Manager in the front-of-house and Izzy Aponte ’26 and Viv Marchetti ’28 as Stage Managers in the back-of-house. Props and costumes are overseen by Sonia Rundle ’27, Linée Weiner ’28, Zatanna Shen ’29, Charlie Stokes ’27, and Jiwoo Park ’29, who also oversees sound design.

The performance is directed by Jennifer Jordan, MHS Director of Theater and Dance, and Katie Polebaum-Freeman is Technical Director, Set and Lighting Designer.
