Academic Spotlight: Advanced Science classes visit Project Oceanology

By Sara Rahiman ’26, Section Writer

This spring, the Science Department took their learning on the road once more.

Students in four upper-level science classes had the opportunity to study and practice marine biology at UConn’s Avery Point campus, Project Oceanology in Groton, Connecticut. Hallmark Biotechnology, Hallmark Environmental Science, and Hallmark Anatomy left campus on Wednesday, April 9th for the three-day trip, returning on Friday, April 11th.

On the first day, MHS students were on a boat on Long Island Sound to get more information about ocean life and to learn the conditions of the water. For some extra fun, students went seal-watching and identified the different species of seals on the rocks. MHS then students dissected and modeled the internal anatomy of a squid, and logged climate change relating to lobsters.

On the second day students went to Mystic Aquarium, where they examined species, saw seal shows, and gathered information about many animals before hitting the gift shop. They walked to the rocky shore to collect data on the water quality and conditions, after which students picked up shells with their friends. They also participated in many different labs, including quantitative plankton studies and sewage plant data.

Before heading back to the campus, they stopped at the Connecticut Science Center. Many students described the trip as eventful and educational.
